Careers
Licorice is a people-first company. This means our people are most important to us, and that we would be nothing without our team.
Hi, it’s Samantha, founder CEO here. This is written by me, not a marketing person…
I’m not going to try and sell you on joining Licorice… You might not be a fit.
Instead, I spend my time on empowering the people I work with, and ensuring they have everything they need to do amazing work and be proud of their job… And sometimes, magically, people discover what they were born to do).
My best days are when someone says “I love my job”, or they find out they can do more than they thought. In my last company, many people went on to senior positions or started their own companies. That wasn’t me, that was all them — I just tried to make a place where they could do it.
Here’s us at a glance:
- We don’t care about superficial things, if you’re a good person and treat others well, you’re alright by us
- We hire on your ability to do the job. If you have the required skills – even if you don’t have the degree or experience – you will get a proper look
- We do expect you can do what you say though, don’t bother trying to hide behind the team, you won’t last
- We look for and recognize the quiet people who excel, but are often overlooked, because they often put others before themselves
- We abide by our values and anti-values, do our best to have fun, and not take ourselves too seriously
- We exist to make our clients’ lives easier. You are my raison d’être — and they are ours
- We are a technical company. We value data, facts, and engineering
Why We’re Making Licorice
From 2010 to 2020, the amount of information grew by 5,000%[1]. From 2015 to 2025, it grew by 8,000%[2]. We believe this is a really big problem.
People are already stressed juggling more and more information, and, let’s face it, we are still the computers who have to work out what to do with it all. It sits there in Outlook, in our PSA, CRM, on our phone. It’s up to us to collate and coordinate it all.
Yes, there is some integration between software, but it’s not very deep and it still requires a lot of heavy lifting from us. We feel this as stress and burnout[3].
This is why we’re building Licorice. We see an opportunity to build a single interface that automatically coordinates this information. Software that drives all our apps, intelligently, so we don’t have to.
So we can get back to doing what matters — touching grass, being with our loved ones, eating great food.
And feeling in control of our information and lives again.
That is why we’re building Licorice.
Does this sound like nonsense? No problem, we’re not a good fit. But if this stirs something deep inside you, or makes you angry, or want to fix it… It’s not an easy problem, otherwise someone would have solved it — but if that doesn’t deter you, we should talk.
How Licorice is Run
I personally believe engineers can change the world, and we are often the ones who do.
We have strong – and different – views on company management, based on data, the science of what makes a great team, a great company, and a great place to work.
To this end we tend to work in small teams, and focus on clarity of communication making sure people have everything they need to do what they do best.
We believe everyone has natural strengths and weaknesses (including myself), and that we succeed by playing to our strengths, supporting each other — and ensuring we have the skills and experience in all corners for the future.
Yours truly,
Samantha Glocker

Values
Transparent
Be open. Have trust and respect for yourself and others. Build a safe haven for learning and growth. Be honest with yourself and others. Listen and seek to understand. Communicate direct to the person who needs to hear it, not around them. Assume the best in others. The truth can sometimes be scary, but delivered in a loving way, it makes us stronger.
Empirical
Make hypotheses and test them. Question, test, measure, validate. Dig for useful data no one else is presenting. Use a repeatable process – not just in technology; also in business. Dig deeper. Ask why do we do things this way? Isn’t there a better way? Why don’t we know this yet? Should we try it? Why not! Yet remember the lessons we’ve learned over time. The best answers come from the best questions!
Bold
Bet on your own abilities and the ability of the team. Just because nobody’s done it, doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Be brave. Find a way. Make a dent in the universe!
Anti-values
Anti-values are behaviours we avoid, because they are unproductive or harmful, to ourselves, to our goals, and to and others.
Arrogant – Having an air of authority without appropriate experience or qualifications
Prestigious – We’re interested in making a difference, not in bragging, fame, or hubris
Complacent – Not challenging accepted knowledge, or resigning to the status-quo
Divisive – Water-cooler gossip and in-house politics are not welcome here
